Marie Marx Strohm Memorial Award

Marie Marx Strohm grew up in Spokane, Washington. She attended Gonzaga University and graduated from Seattle University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. After a varied career in education, radio and TV, she founded Hummingbird Productions.

Marie became one of the premier producers of short documentary films for major environmental campaigns including the International Mitsubishi Boycott (which was Green Corps’ first major campaign), the Great Bear Rainforest Campaign (to save the largest intact North American temperate rainforest in B.C.), the International Tar Sands Campaign (to block approval of the Keystone XL, TransCanada, and Northern Gateway pipelines), and the Napa Valley Native Forest Protection Campaign. Marie received 10 Telly Awards for her video production excellence, the Gold Special Jury Award at Worldfest Houston (2000) for the Great Bear Rainforest Video, and an L.A. Independent Filmmakers Festival Best Short Documentary Award in 2016 for her Napa Valley Campaign video. She also was one of the premier producers of fundraising videos for nonprofit service organizations in the U.S., helping to raise tens of millions of dollars for groups dedicated to causes like Alzheimer’s disease, battered women, childhood leukemia, homeless healthcare, Girl Scouts and Native American youth education.

Sadly, Marie died unexpectedly of a congenital heart disease in November of 2020. Working through Marie’s family, a close friend of hers made a generous gift to Green Corps to be spent over 10 years to recruit new organizers and to establish an annual memorial award in her honor. With this award, we celebrate the achievements of a graduate who demonstrates exceptional skill in the use of media in their social justice and environmental advocacy work. Marie’s family is dedicated to perpetuating this memorial with Green Corps beyond 10 years.
